For a great round rattan place mat you just need twine and hot glue.  Braid peices of twine into a long solid piece. Starting at the finished end, twist the twine braid around itself making a circle and using the hot glue to keep it in place. Continue twisting the braid around the circle and using the glue until you have your desired size of mat.  Finish off by adding the glue to the ends and having them glued ito place.
